diving bell and the butterfly (homework)

The script made his girlfriend seem as though she does not care and that she had distanced herself from Jean-do whereas in the book, the girlfriend always visited and cared for him but the mother of his child didn’t. This is not fair for the girlfriend as she was there for him all the time and the script made it look like she wasn’t.

Jean-do is shown to always be around his kids in the script but in the book it didn’t really mention him being with his kids. This is mainly to get the audience feeling sympathetic towards him and feel sorry for his condition and the things he went through.

Bauby says little about the difficulties with communicating with people when wanting to spell words where as in the film, this is the main structure (Jean-do figuring out the letters he wants to use and building his relationship with the nurses).

The relationship between Jean-do and his father in the film is more emotional than the book, which comes to a few pages of sad reminiscing about shaving his dad. The tearful conversation where his father attempts to communicate with him by phone isn't in the book.

What does the film suggest about contemporary French society?

Women are seen to be inferior then men and seen to be sexually objectified in the script. The film usually presents females as individuals that are not independent and rely a lot on Men. Females usually do not mix with Male in the workplace and when they do mix,  the male is always the females boss (someone that orders them around). Women are also presented as emotional beings.
